You want to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook, and old guides skip steps that now matter. IONOS gives you server settings, but moving old mail, keeping folders and choosing between classic and new Outlook is on you. Below are four ways to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook, with real IONOS settings and Microsoft limits for every one.

What settings do you need to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook?

You need your IONOS address, its password and server values. 1&1 Internet became 1&1 IONOS on 29 October 2018, so 1&1 mail and IONOS mail are one service. IONOS publishes these values in its help centre.

1. Incoming IMAP server: imap.ionos.com, port 993, SSL/TLS.
2. Incoming POP3 server: pop.ionos.com, port 995, SSL/TLS.
3. Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.ionos.com, port 465, SSL/TLS. Port 587 with STARTTLS works where 465 is blocked.
4. Username: your full email address. Password: one for that specific address.

IONOS says Outlook 2016 and 2019 want TLS on port 587, while Outlook for Microsoft 365 wants STARTTLS there. Use IMAP, not POP3, when you want folders. IONOS lists no step to switch IMAP on for an address.

How to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook over IMAP?

Add your IONOS mailbox to classic Outlook for Microsoft 365 as an IMAP account. Folders sync from IONOS servers, so IMAP is simplest.

1. Open Outlook and enter your IONOS email address.
2. Select Advanced options, then Let me set up my account manually, then Connect.
3. Choose IMAP. IONOS recommends IMAP over POP.
4. Enter imap.ionos.com, port 993 and SSL/TLS for incoming mail.
5. Enter smtp.ionos.com, port 465 and SSL/TLS for outgoing mail, then select Next.
6. Enter your password and select Connect. Select Done when Outlook says account was added.

To add more addresses later, go to File, then Info, then Add account and repeat. If your password is rejected, IONOS advises setting a new password for that address. Catch: IMAP mirrors your server, so a message you delete in Outlook can vanish from IONOS too, and folders stay online until you copy them.

How to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook with a PST file?

Export your IONOS folders from classic Outlook to a PST file, then import that file into another Outlook. Use it to keep a local copy or move mail to a new PC.

1. Add your IONOS account to classic Outlook over IMAP and wait for folders to sync.
2. Select File, then Open & Export, then Import/Export.
3. Choose Export to a file, then Outlook Data File (.pst).
4. Select your IONOS account at top of folder list and tick include subfolders.
5. Browse to a save location and finish.
6. In new Outlook, open Settings, then Data files, then Import to bring PST mail into a mailbox.

Microsoft says new Outlook for Windows can import a PST. Steps are Get started, Select file, select folders, choose how to handle duplicates, choose destination mailbox and select Import. Classic Outlook has to be installed to open a PST as a data file in new Outlook, both must use one 32-bit or 64-bit build, and ARM is not supported. Menu names for classic Outlook differ by version, so follow labels you see.

Steps to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook with software

1. Install it on a Windows PC and start it as administrator.
2. Choose IMAP option and enter imap.ionos.com, port 993, your full IONOS address and password.
3. Tick mail folders you want. A message count shows beside every folder.
4. Add date, sender or attachment filters if you want less mail.
5. Choose PST as output format and set a destination folder.
6. Start backup, then import your PST into Outlook with steps in previous section.

How to migrate 1&1 emails to Outlook.com or Microsoft 365?

If your Outlook is an online mailbox, copy mail straight into it. Corbett Email Migration Tool reads one live mailbox and writes into another account. Its page lists Microsoft 365, Outlook.com and any IMAP host.

1. Install Corbett Email Migration Tool on a Windows PC.
2. Choose your IONOS mailbox as source: imap.ionos.com, port 993, address and password.
3. Choose Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com as destination and sign in through Microsoft's consent window.
4. Select folders and start. Check results in Outlook on web.

Folders, dates and read status stay intact, duplicates are skipped and a CSV report lists results. Source access is read only, so IONOS mail stays put. IONOS is not named on its page, so type server values by hand and run a free trial first. There is no scheduler, so plan one cutover. How to move 1&1 IONOS contacts to Outlook?

Mail copy does not bring contacts. Export your IONOS address book as CSV, then import that file into Outlook.

1. Sign in to IONOS Webmail and select Address Book icon in blue navigation bar at top left.
2. Select your address book, open its Action icon menu and choose export as CSV.
3. Open new Outlook and select People, then Import contacts.
4. Select Browse, choose your CSV file, then select Import.

IONOS's own Microsoft 365 article says to export Webmail contacts in CSV format. It also says to open your CSV in WordPad and save it before import in classic Outlook, which uses its Import/Export Wizard. IONOS does not print its Export label, so use wording on your screen. Microsoft recommends UTF-8 encoding for CSV files, so cancel and convert your file if names look wrong in preview.

Why does 1&1 email not work in Outlook?

Password is rejected

IONOS advises assigning a new password for that email address. Test it first by signing in to IONOS Webmail. Microsoft Q&A has a post from a user with several IONOS addresses who got "unable to sign in" in Outlook for Mac and asked for a manual setup screen. It shows no reply or fix.

Mail does not send or receive

IONOS says to check account settings, firewall ports and antivirus. Try port 587 with STARTTLS if 465 is blocked.

Outlook auto setup fails

IONOS's Outlook article does not say automatic setup works. Use Advanced options and set up your account manually with values above.

Can't import PST into new Outlook

Microsoft says importing a PST works in new Outlook for Windows, but opening one needs classic Outlook and a Microsoft 365 subscription. Calendar and contacts in PST are not available there.

Some 1&1 emails are missing in Outlook

IMAP only shows what is on server. Check IONOS Webmail folders, and keep your IONOS account until counts match.
