Combine VCF Files into One

2. Press Windows + R, type cmd and select OK.
3. Go to your folder: cd /d C:\Contacts\ToMerge
4. Combine VCF files into one: copy /b *.vcf ..\merged.vcf. Your new file lands in your parent folder, so a second run does not pull it in as a source.
5. Count contacts: find /c "BEGIN:VCARD" ..\merged.vcf
6. Compare that number with your expected total. If it matches, you did combine VCF files into one, so import merged.vcf into your contacts app.

Our earlier post printed copy *.vcf xyz combined vcard.vcf. Spaces in that name make Command Prompt read every word as another source file, and it never added /b. Use one name without spaces. A Microsoft Q&A user on Windows 11 ran plain copy *.vcf all.vcf in March 2024 and got one contact in your output file. A volunteer replied that copy prints "1 file(s) copied" even when it copies every file and suggested adding /V to verify. Count with find instead of trusting that message.

How to combine VCF files into one on Mac or Linux?

Terminal joins files with cat. Use it when your VCF files came from a Mac or an iPhone backup.

1. Open Terminal and go to your folder to merge VCF files into one: cd ~/Desktop/Contacts
2. Combine VCF files into one: cat *.vcf > ../merged.vcf
3. Count contacts: grep -c "BEGIN:VCARD" ../merged.vcf
4. If contacts run together, add a line break after every file: for f in *.vcf; do cat "$f"; echo; done > ../merged.vcf

Skip online mergers for contacts: they limit file size and need your address book uploaded.

Use copy /b, not plain copy, and run it in Command Prompt, not PowerShell. A Microsoft Q&A volunteer saw one-contact results in PowerShell too. Count BEGIN:VCARD lines to know your real total.

A source file has no final line break. On Mac or Linux, use that echo loop. On Windows, open every file in Notepad and press Enter after END:VCARD.
