Migration scope
Zimbra exports a mailbox as a compressed TGZ file, and a TGZ file does not open in most mail programs. Zimbra migration tool opens your Zimbra TGZ files on Windows and saves mail as PST, EML, MBOX, PDF or HTML, or sends it to Gmail, Office 365 and IMAP.

4Where Zimbra keeps your mail
Zimbra REST API export mailbox reference lists zip, tar and tgz as export formats, and the tgz format is a compressed TAR file. Zimbra Migration Tool opens those TGZ files and saves your mail where you need it.

Core features
Five screens of Corbett Zimbra migration tool, in migration order.
Source files
Select Open, then Email Servers, then Zimbra Files. The wizard loads your Zimbra mail into its panel.
Zimbra mailbox export files use the TGZ format. Keep your TGZ files together in one folder, so the wizard loads them in a single step.
Batch loading
A folder picker opens. Select the folder with your Zimbra TGZ files and press Select Folder.
Every Zimbra file in that folder loads together, so one session covers many mailboxes.
Message preview
Click any message and a reading pane opens beside four tabs. Content shows the body, Message Header lists the sender and routing data, Hex View shows stored bytes and Raw Message shows the source.
Right click an attachment for Open, Save or Save All, so you check files before migration starts.
Filters
Advance Search lets you search in All, Emails, Calendars, Contacts, Tasks or Notes and set a From and To date. Press Find and tick only the folders you want to move.
Reset clears your filters, and folders you leave unticked stay out of the job.
Output formats
The Export menu groups targets. Email Files hold EML, MBOX and PST. Document Files hold PDF, HTML, TEXT and CSV.
Email Services hold Gmail, Office 365 and IMAP, and Email Clients hold Thunderbird. Select a service, sign in to the target account and your mail lands there instead of in a file.
Working process
Four steps take your Zimbra mail to its target. Try them on a few folders in free demo first.
Open Zimbra files
Start Zimbra migration tool, select Open, then Email Servers and Zimbra Files. Choose the folder that holds your Zimbra files.
Preview and select mail
Your Zimbra folders load as one tree. Click any email to preview it, then tick the folders you need.
Filter and choose a target
Use Advance Search to limit the job by item type and date. Select Export, then PST, EML, MBOX, PDF, Gmail, Office 365 or another target.
Save or send your mail
Set options, select Browse for a folder and press Save. For Gmail or Office 365, sign in to the target account first.
Moving mail to a mailbox is covered in Import Zimbra TGZ to Gmail and Zimbra to Office 365 migration tool.

Before migration
Three short checks keep your Zimbra migration clean.
Make a Zimbra copy
Back up your Zimbra store before you start. A spare copy keeps your original safe.
Choose all mail or chosen items
Move every folder at once, or limit the job to the folders and item types you need.
Leave space for output
PST and PDF output needs free room on the destination disk, and one PST for every folder keeps files small.
Zimbra files need the Business or Enterprise licence. Compare plans on the Corbett buy page.
Best practice
A migration only helps if your mail arrives complete. Four habits keep your data safe through it.
Back up first
Copy your Zimbra store before you start. Keep 3 copies on 2 types of media with 1 copy off site.
Start with one mailbox
Migrate one small Zimbra folder and open a few emails in your target. Catch a wrong setting before a large job.
Check the count
Compare the message count in the folder tree with the mail in your target before you close the job.
Keep originals until checked
Store your Zimbra data until counts match. Delete it only after you open migrated mail.
